Johnson: We're not Defensive
Manchester City FC winger Adam Johnson has told Soccer Betting in an exclusive interview that Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini isn't just centered around a defensive mentality, and that he wants his attacking players to go forward. The England winger also revealed how flattered he was to be compared to Manchester United left winger Ryan Giggs.
Manchester City star Johnson, 22, has been heralded in some quarters as the answer to England's left wing problem, a gap England managers have struggled to fill since Chris Waddle. However the Manchester City winger is eager to point out that Mancini is not solely a defensive tactician, and that the Italian is eager for his attacking options to express themselves.
Johnson moved to Manchester City in the January transfer window for a fee believed to be in the region of £8 million, and the youngster is eager to prove he can be a star in the Premier League. Manchester City winger Johnson told Sport.co.uk that he is enjoying Mancini's style, and feels it is unfair he dubbed a negative coach.
'He's brought the Italian mentality with not getting beaten, being very good defensively and keeping a good, solid shape. But he likes attacking players and he likes to watch good football and that's what he's trying to put into us. That's what I like doing and he's been tremendous with me from day one.'
'It's not a defensive mentality where no-one's allowed to go forward, it's just you don't want to be left wide open when everyone's attacking because the number of teams you see getting caught on the counter attack these days is just phenomenal. I think he wants everything just perfect, we do our tactical positions so we know what he wants from us in each position, and that's brought me on a lot to be honest.'
